Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last year, you’ve probably heard of the Star Wars TV show The Mandalorian, and it’s title character

This is a 3D print of Din Djarin (“The Mandalorian”) and his little friend Grogu (“Baby Yoda”). I got the file off Thingiverse (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4015085) and printed it out standing about 75mm high as a gift for my son. We’ve been watching and enjoying the show together, and he was absolutely stoked to have his own Mando and Baby Yoda, even though at the time it was just plain grey resin.

A little while ago though he came to me and asked me to paint it. To be honest I was a little intimidated by this as it’s a much larger scale than I usually paint and so I was thinking my usual techniques wouldn’t be up to scratch. However, my boy helpfully pointed out that I recently painted a figure standing even taller than this (even though it was technically a smaller scale…) when I did this giant. So I got stuck in.

It’s not going to win any prizes, the cape at the back is honestly a bit gash but I didn’t want to spend forever doing it as my boy was waiting to have it back. It sat on my painting shelf for way too long as it was while I researched exact colours from the show. It turns out that Mando’s costume seems to have changed colours quite a bit, which didn’t help. The “client” actually helped there by saying he wanted the Season 2 armour (ie: lots of shiny Beskar) even though it’s basically a Season 1 model. So obviously 100% accuracy to what you saw on screen wasn’t a big deal and I just picked something and went with it.

The model was originally freestanding, which is cool, but once it had paint on the balance just shifted slightly and it became a little bit prone to falling over, so I gave it a base and printed out a stormtrooper helmet to decorate it.

All up it’s ok, and was a fun little diversion from painting wargames minis. The client is very happy, although he seems to be a bit late paying the invoice…

If you’d like one of your own (minus paint) I’ll print you one, just click on this link and go to the shop:
